Take a Walk
200cm x 130cm
Oil on canvas
2025
The work captures partial views of figures and dogs from a low angle, elevating light, shadow, and the ground to become the subjects of the composition. Large areas of negative space create a rhythmic breath, transforming the passage of time during a walk into visual rhythm. The artist employs oil painting techniques that approximate the syntax of ink wash: through multiple layers of thin glazing, wet-on-wet blending, and meticulous control of density and lightness, allowing light and colour to flow like ink. The work extends the aesthetic philosophy of Chinese literati painting—"achieving more with less, emphasising spirit resonance, and valuing rhythm"—executing a structural translation of the spirit of ink wash within the materiality of oil paint. This allows a contemporary everyday scene to carry the internal logic and temporal artistic conception of Eastern aesthetics.
